Effects Aromatherapy Has On The Brain

Perhaps the usefulness of aromatherapy may not be so obvious to you either. It is helpful to understand how aromatherapy actually works in order to understand how it can help. The primary effects of aromatherapy are on the limbic system in the brain. The limbic system has been described by the medical community as a set of brain structures that support a variety of functions. The functions that the limbic system

of the brain maintains include both the motion and memory brain functions. This system of the brain operates in tandem with the endocrine system and the automatic nervous system. Through the endocrine system, the limbic system can influence the amount of pleasure that is felt. The same part of the brain plays a role in sexual arousal as well as other high endorphin moments.

Because of the large role that a scent can play in bringing a specific memories or emotions, aromatherapy can be a useful tool to utilize or apply therapy to the limbic system of the brain.

There are various aromatherapy scents and related feelings to these scents, the smells are designed to remind the person taking them of a happy time or place that the person has had at some point within their life. That limbic system response is why many aromatherapy products have some success using smells that are season oriented. Many times, the cinnamon candle can remind someone of Christmas or give him or her all of the Christmas season feelings.

Have you ever wondered why a certain sense or smell will remind you of places, people, or things? Have you ever noticed that some smells will make you feel warm and comfortable and remind you of places where you were happy and other smells can have the opposite effect? This is very similar to how aromatherapy works. The scents and smells will evoke certain responses within your body that will produce a particular response or effect.

The Incredible Edible Lemon (Essential Oil that is)

The Incredible Benefits of Lemon Essential Oil Aroma

Simple Lemon essential oil is often overlooked for it’s aroma-therapeutic effects, mostly as it’s not very exotic. Lemon…”ho-hum, I’ve got lemons in the ‘fridge”…but the idea of Frankincense or Helichrysum sounds like it might do us more good ~ in a mysterious sort of way. But all essential oils have their use, and lemon is at the front of the pack in terms of supporting mental and emotional health.

Lemon essential oil has long been used as a mental stimulant and brightener of the mind. Now scientific investigators have demonstrated some of the mechanisms for this effect. In Japan, a study has shown that lemon oil vapor (as produced by a nebulizing diffuser) has anti-stress effects by modulating both the Serotonin and Dopamine neurotransmitter systems. The conclusion was that lemon oil aroma has both anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects. Other research performed in Japan years ago showed a significant improvement in mental accuracy for office workers inhaling the aroma.

Also recently published by other Japanese researchers shows that lemon oil actually limits the toxicity of scopolamine ~ a natural plant alkaloid with medicinal effects at low dosages, that shows neurotoxicity at higher dosages. Scoploamine overdose can cause dementia and memory loss. Lemon oil prevented these effects from occuring.

Lemon oil is easy to use, and very safe. It’s aroma can be enjoyed from any diffuser, though it would be best to use in a cold-air unit due to the delicate nature of citrus essential oils in general. One can simply just enjoy the aroma as frequently as you like. Here are the studies:

Study: Components of lemon essential oil attenuate dementia induced by scopolamine.

Zhou W, Fukumoto S, Yokogoshi H.Laboratory of Nutritional Biochemistry and G-COE Program in the 21st Century, Graduate School of Nutritional and Environmental Science, University of Shizuoka, Shizuoka, Japan.

The anti-dementia effects of s-limonene and s-perillyl alcohol were observed using the passive avoidance test (PA) and the open field habituation test (OFH). These lemon essential oils showed strong ability to improve memory impaired by scopolamine; however, s-perillyl alcohol relieved the deficit of associative memory in PA only, and did not improve non-associative memory significantly in OFH. Analysis of neurotransmitter concentration in some brain regions on the test day showed that dopamine concentration of the vehicle/scopolamine group was significantly lower than that of the vehicle/vehicle group, but this phenomenon was reversed when s-limonene or s-perillyl alcohol were administered before the injection of scopolamine. Simultaneously, we found that these two lemon essential oil components could inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity in vitro using the Ellman method.

Study: Lemon oil vapor causes an anti-stress effect via modulating the 5-HT and DA activities in mice.

Komiya M, Takeuchi T, Harada E.Graduate School of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Yamaguchi University, Yamaguchi 753-8515, Japan.

We examined the anti-stress action of the essential oils of lavender, rose, and lemon using an elevated plus-maze task (EPM), a forced swimming task (FST), and an open field task (OFT) in mice. Lemon oil had the strongest anti-stress effect in all three behavioral tasks. We further investigated a regulatory mechanism of the lemon oil by pre-treatments with agonists or antagonists to benzodiazepine, 5-HT, DA, and adrenaline receptors by the EPM and the FST. The anti-stress effect of lemon oil was significantly blocked by pre-treatment with frumazenil, benzodiazepine receptor antagonist, or apomorphine, a nonselective DA receptor agonist. In contrast, agonists or antagonists to the 5-HT receptor and the alpha-2 adrenaline receptor did not affect the anti-stress effect of lemon oil. Buspirone, DOI, and mianserine blocked the antidepressant-like effect of lemon oil in the FST, but WAY100,635 did not. These findings suggest that the antidepressant-like effect of lemon oil is closely related with the 5-HTnergic pathway, especially via 5-HT(1A) receptor. Moreover, the lemon oil significantly accelerated the metabolic turnover of DA in the hippocampus and of 5-HT in the prefrontal cortex and striatum. These results suggest that lemon oil possesses anxiolytic, antidepressant-like effects via the suppression of DA activity related to enhanced 5-HTnergic neurons.

Emotional Healing With Essential Oils

Many people wonder about how to use the oils for Emotional Health and Healing.  This is great information about using Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils to work with the emotional body. Thanks to Gary Young’s sister, Nancy Sanderson for putting this informative and educational email together.

There is more focus on emotional behavior and psychological conditions of the body now than at any time in our history.  Many doctors are recognizing the possibility that a number of diseases are caused by emotional problems that link back to infancy and perhaps even to the womb.  These emotional problems may have compromised our immune system or genetic structuring, causing children to be come allergic to something that the mother ingested while pregnant.

Essential oils play an important role in assisting people to move beyond these emotional barriers.  The aldehydes and esters of certain essential oils are very calming and sedating to the central nervous system (including both the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems).  These substances allow us to relax instead of letting anxiety build up in our body.  Anxiety creates an acidic condition that activates the transcript enzyme which then transcribes that anxiety on the RNA template and stores it in the DNA.  That emotion then becomes a predominant factor in our lives from that moment on.

When we encounter an emotionally charged situation, instead of being overwhelmed by it, we can diffuse essential oils, put them in our bath, or wear them as cologne.  The aromatic molecules will absorb into the bloodstream from the nasal cavity to the limbic system.  They will activate the amygdala (the memory center for fear and trauma) and sedate and relax the sympathetic/parasympathetic system. The oils help support the body in minimizing the acid that is created so that it does not initiate a reaction with the transcript enzyme.

Because essential oils affect the amygdala and pineal gland in the brain, they can help the mind and body by releasing emotional trauma and sharpening focus.

People have many distractions in today’s fast-paced world.  Essential oils may assist people to stay centered in their goals.  Those who are struggling to retain or remember information can breathe the essential oils of peppermint, cardamom, or rosemary to stimulate the brain and memory functions for better concentration.  Those who find it difficult to stay focused breathe the essential oils of galbanum, frankincense, sandalwood, and Melissa.  These oils are extremely beneficial for clarifying one’s purpose.

ORAC Scores for Essential Oils

ORAC Score

The ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) assay is a laboratory procedure developed in 1992 at the National Institute of Aging in Silver Springs, Maryland.  It is used to measure the antioxidant capacities of many foods, juices, and oils.  The higher the ORAC score, the more capable that particular food or oil is of destroying free radicals (Free radicals can cause disease and aging by changing the structure of the body’s cell walls, DNA, and protein, disrupting their important functions), thus retarding the aging process and preventing cancers and other diseases.

Foods with a high ORAC score may be able to protect cells and their components from oxidative damage. Oxygen radicals are chemicals that form naturally inside the body through the process of oxidation. Everyday functions such as digestion and physical activity produce oxygen radicals. Daily exposure to polluted air, rancid food and oxidizing radiation from the sun and electrical appliances also contribute.

An easy to understand example of oxidation is to imagine rust attacking metal. When the rust eats away at the metal, the metal starts to weaken and decay until it can no longer work. This is what happens to our body when free radicals attack it. Organs, cells and other parts of the body can be weakened by oxidation. This leads to diseases such as cancer, skin and heart diseases, senile dementia and osteoarthritis.

Studies have shown that eating foods with a high ORAC score will raise the antioxidant levels in the blood by around 10 to 25%. The ORAC figure suggested by experts is around 5,000 units per day to have a significant effect on plasma and tissue antioxidant levels. Eating eight to ten servings of brightly colored fruits and vegetables or dark greens will help achieve this level.

Here are some examples of ORAC scores:

Fruits and Vegtables Essential Oils
Carrots   210 Sandalwood (Aloes)  160
Oranges  750 Frankincense  630
Beets      840 Rose of Sharon (cistus)  3,860
Raspberries  1,220 Cinnamon 10,340
Strawberries  1,540 Spikenard 54,800
Blueberries  2,400 Myrhh    379,800
Wolfberries  25,300 Clove      1,078,700

Most essential oils score higher than most fruits and vegetables, as the two tables above suggest.  In fact, essential oils have the highest ORAC scores of all substances in the world.  An ounce of Clove Oil has the antioxidant capacity of 320 pounds of carrots, 28 quarts of blueberries, or 10 gallons of beet juice.  The exceptionally high ORAC scores of essential oils partially explains why living with them in your daily environment – to breathe, eat, and apply to your body – can support all of your systems and contribute effectively towards long healthful living, even when used in very small quantities, and even when only inhaling them.
